5) But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness. 6) Just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: 7) “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; 8) Blessed is the man to whom God shall not impute sin”Romans 4:5-8
We can not be saved by joining the church, or by getting baptized, or by giving of my ‘time, treasure and/or talent.’ Salvation is not a reward for the righteous, it is a gift for the guilty. ‘Impute’ means to put on your account. God put righteousness on your account. He imputed it to you. You didn’t earn it and you don’t deserve it. But when you put your faith in the crucified Son of God, God imputed righteousness to you.
